Screens Stack

Screens suite | Joe Workman | $39.95

Every now and again a product comes along that reminds you of everything that makes Rapidweaver such a wonderful way to build professional-level websites. The Screens suite of stacks is such a product.

At nearly $40.00 it may feel as though you’re shopping on the Kardashian side of the street, but when you consider what you’re getting – essentially a way to create any kind of single-page scrolling responsive site that you like – then it’s great value.

Screens is a selection of stacks that provide the key elements you need to make a single page site – the base, a stack for each page, a site styles stack, menu stack, a horizontal slide stack and an animations stack. The whole lot works with the free Foundation theme (you don’t need any of the paid add on packs – with one exception, see below) and provides an outstanding framework for creating single page sites.

What’s so impressive about Screens is the simplicity. Each new Screens Page stack automatically fills the height of the browser window and any content you place inside it ‘sits’ perfectly centred on the vertical, so there’s no fiddling about. Need padding on either side? You can do with with a single slider. Want to auto-scale your text so that it shrinks to display more effectively on smaller screens? Just tick a box. Want the menu absent on the first page but present everywhere else? Again, just tick a box. Need a shadow on that menu bar to make it stand out? You get the idea. This really is the fastest, most bullet-proof way we’ve ever seen to create a one-page scrolling Rapidweaver site.

Screens is suited to sites where content is light – or visual – but should you need more than a screensworth you can always use a Screens Slide stack which allows visitors to scroll left and right through additional pages before continuing their scroll downwards. Once again, Screens provides all the navigation you need – left and right arrows, up and down, or all four – in various styles; add a stack of navigation dots that can be ranged down the edge of the screen, a vertical menu option, simple links and an off-canvas layout, and you’ve got a very flexible set of navigation tools. (Note: the last menu the requires the Off Canvas stack which is part of the Foundation Addon Pack which costs $29.95).

The main stylistic settings for Screens can be set up using the included Screens Styles stack; if you’re familiar with Foundation’s Site Styles stack, this is a kind of scaled down version, but it still allows you to set all the important global options like fonts, header sizes, basic colours and so on. In addition to being able to style the basics of the whole site from here, you can also configure pages individually with background images, colours or attractive gradients; and as with everything else, Screens makes this kind of thing very easy.

The Animation stack includes 33 different effects and you can control the duration and delay before starting; there’s also an option to animate on first display only. As always, use animations sparingly for best effect.

Screens is a delight. A set of stacks that’s easy to use, makes building a single page responsive website quick as lightning, yet has enough variations to ensure that no two sites need to look the same. Outstanding.
