Cinema Slider

1LD/ONE LITTLE DESIGNER

The Cinema Slider is so nearly the slider we’ve been waiting for that it’s almost painful. Like many Rapidweaver users, we’ve been searching for something that has some of the flexibility, advanced captioning and animation features of third party sliders like Layer Slider and Revolution Slider without success. Cinema Slider isn’t quite there yet but it’s a versatile and powerful way to display different kinds of visual information including graphics, photos, videos and text – in fact, pretty much anything you can drop into a stack.

There are two stacks included – the Slider and the Slide. Drop the first one into a Stacks page and then add as many slides. Adding the actual content is a bit different because images need to be dropped into the HUD’s well on the right hand side, while the Slide stacks themselve are reserved for captions and any other stacks you want to overlay on top. At its simplest then you can simply add the requisite number of slides, drop in a caption for each one and you’ll have a good looking slideshow with 28 transition effects and nice captions that animate up from the bottom left hand corner.

But that’s just the start.

Cinema Slider isn’t quite there yet but it’s a versatile and powerful way to display different kinds of visual information including graphics, photos, videos and text – in fact, pretty much anything you can drop into a stack. allows you to mix and match video from YouTube and Vimeo together with photos and text only slides; you can simply select the media type you want to use on a slide-by-slide basis. Videos from YouTube and Vimeo just require the publicly available code and a screen shot (so the transition effect will work) and you’re done.

Image size can be set using the aspect ration (use this if you can because it’ll create the best effect at different screen sizes) but you can also set a percentage height for unsually sized pictures or a static height – though this isn’t ideal for responsive sites. You can add thumbnails along the bottom of the slider or have them appear over the navigation dots on mouse hover and slideshows can be set full width or in a fancy frame.

One or two things still feel a bit clunky. ‘Cover shots’ for Vimeo and YouTube videos appear briefly before and after the video itself with a little ‘jerk’ which spoils the flow of an otherwise slick slideshow; we also repeatedly tried to customise captions using the built-in controls for the text stack, rather than those that come with Cinema Slider isn’t quite there yet but it’s a versatile and powerful way to display different kinds of visual information including graphics, photos, videos and text – in fact, pretty much anything you can drop into a stack.; and we couldn’t get rid of the grey strip along the bottom of the slideshow, even when thumbnails were set to only display over the navigation dots.

But there were unexpected bonuses too. Cinema Slider’s pretty forgiving about which stacks you can add to your captions, making it easy to include elements like Font Awesome icons, buttons, social media icons and so on – it also worked fine with Google Fonts, thus opening a world of typographic fun. Even more interestingly we had some success making Cinema Slider work with Elixir’s Animagic animation stack which over-rides the built in effects  with its own and means you could be able to create some really sophisticated caption animation effects.

Overall Cinema Slider isn’t quite there yet but it’s a versatile and powerful way to display different kinds of visual information including graphics, photos, videos and text – in fact, pretty much anything you can drop into a stack. is an excellent stack, full-featured and well-priced and definitely worth considering.
